One of the stand out bands on the line-up for me at Latitude this year was Ash, a band I’ve listened to over and over since my late teens, with songs like Girl From Mars and Burn Baby Burn also staples of indie club nights.
So I was definitely make a point of shooting some photos and trying to listen to as much of their set as possible, as I’ve never managed to see them live before.
They did not disappoint, with Tim Wheeler taking to the second stage, with his trademark Flying V guitar held aloft. Opening with A Life Less Ordinary, from the film of the same name. Followed by Angel Inceptor from 1977.
Bassist Mark Hamilton was throwing shapes all around the stage for 2004 road trip classic Orpheus and it’s fantastic opening bass and rhythm intro.
With Goldfinger, Oh Yeah and Shining Light tucked in the middle of the set giving the band and audience a little time to sway along instead of dance like crazy.
While they stuck to their big hits they also played Braindead from last year’s Race The Night, which breaks from their Dinosaur Jr or Pavement inspired form, reminding more of early tracks from The Hives.
Then they would bring the set to a close with Kung Fu, Girl From Mars and finishing with Burn Baby Burn from Free All Angels, much to the joy of the crowd.
