Sunday night saw Oxford shoe gaze royalty Ride, arrive in Cambridge at the Junction to a sold out crowd for the last night of their UK tour.
With support from junodream and their very noughties look, complete with wrap around shades. Musically they seem to merge Radiohead with some shoe gaze and even hip hop influences.
This tour was mainly a chance for Ride to promote this year’s new LP, Interplay. So they opened with Monaco and Portland Rocks from it. Then went on to intersperse the set with older classics from Nowhere and Going Blank Again.
It’s always hard to judge how much a shoe gaze audience are enjoying a show due to the nature of the music, I had thought that new tune Peace Sign off Interplay, might be a great song live given its “Give me a peace sign, throw your hands in the air” chorus that might have the crowd doing the same, but it generally fell a little flat. Perhaps most of the crowd were waiting to hear the likes of Vapour Trail?
The crowd were probably the most animated for Twisterella, which leans more britpop-esque than shoe gaze, but also sang along to the opening lines of Vapour Trail as they played it as the penultimate song of the main set.
